CLUT Editing

[Editor's Note: This page is from an entry by Raúl Bonilla in the WMaiD Developers Blog Online. You can find the original here - tBC]

Back in the day, Blayne didn’t have access to Photoshop and he was having a hard time trying to figure out how to edit color tables without the ubiquitous image editor. I took the Myth slideshow application bundled with the Marathon Trilogy CD and made him a graphical explanation on how to do what he wants with a combination of shareware and freeware tools. Since I’m preparing myself to do the Photoshop part of the Slider monster and post about the process, I’ll use this explanation as a sort of prologue to the series.

Blayne already had imported the monster’s bitmaps into the Shapes file without trouble, and as I remember, he was trying to create a second color variation, but didn’t know how. We were starting to know each other, so he didn’t sent me the WMaiD Shapes file; instead, he sent me only the collection as a PICT file and forgot to include the color table. I suspected ignorance behind his omission, and this led me to do a step-by-step slideshow, rather than a quick-and-dirty guide, with Infinity’s Shapes file.

If you’re familiar with Anvil and already have a defined color table, skip to step 11; otherwise, read from the start. Let’s begin:

Step 10-11: Uh Oh

Before proceeding, there are a couple of things you should know:

a) The color tables follow a numeric order. For example, the Juggernaut collection is CLUT 3101.

3 = collection number.
1 = standard collection. 2 is used for custom collections (think of weapons in hand and landscapes.)
01 = color table number.

b) ResEdit allows an easy way to duplicate color tables: just copy and paste. The danger of doing this is that if the pasted color table contains less colors than the one being replaced, Anvil (and Marathon) will crash; but not the other way around. If the pasted color table contains more colors, nothing wrong will happen.

c) Never delete a color table with ResEdit. This will crash Anvil and Marathon as well. If you damage the Shapes file via error #1 or #2, simple paste a good color table on the damaged slot and reinstall the color tables back into the Shapes file.
