Armed Citizen

Paul Garner was awakened by shattering glass when, police said, an intruder with a prior burglary conviction attempted to break in through a window. Garner grabbed his .45-caliber, semi-automatic handgun and, when the burglar lifted the window blinds, he fired three rounds. The intruder died at the scene. The incident was at least the fifth time since April that a San Antonio property owner shot an intruder. (San Antonio Express-News, San Antonio, TX, 10/17/08)

Police said four men were intent on committing their second burglary of the evening but, on this attempt, they met with a prepared homeowner. As the four entered the home, the barking of the family dog awakened the homeowner and his family. The homeowner confronted the men, who demanded money. As the homeowner fled back to the bedroom, one of the robbers fired a sawed-off shotgun. The homeowner returned with a handgun, shooting one of the robbers and causing the four intruders to flee the scene. All four robbers were later arrested. A 23-year-old University of Arizona student was at his residence several blocks north of campus when two men knocked on the door. According to police, the knock came at an unusual hour, so the student retrieved a handgun before opening the door. One of the men asked to speak to an individual whose name the student didn't know. At that point, the student noticed the second man was wearing a bandana and holding a handgun. The student tried to slam the door shut, but the men, both of whom had criminal records dating to 1997, forced their way inside. The student drew his handgun, shooting and killing both men. "Had he not done what he did, he probably would have been dead right now, said Tucson police Sgt. Fabian Pacheco. (The Daily Wildcat, Tucson, AZ, 10/17/08)

When Steve Manning's wife heard someone breaking into her home, she woke her husband, who sprang into action. Manning said a "huge man full of rage" was repeatedly charging the front with a straight arm and shouting, "Dude, you are going to get yours! Dude, you're going to get it'" But Manning was not about to allow himself or his wife to be harmed. He quickly armed himself with his handgun, shouting to the intruder, "If you come into this house, I will shoot you! According to police, the man did not heed the advice, forcing the door open. Manning fired two shots, wounding the suspect. Manning said the shots appeared to surprise the suspect and, strangely, calmed him. Police arrested the suspect in a nearby flower bed. Two assailants armed with shotguns approached a man sitting in his pickup outside his home, according to police. They ordered the victim out of the truck and, having not entirely formulated a plan, paused to consider their next course of action. "One of the men decided to force [the victim] back inside his residence and told him to get up, said police spokesman Lt. Paul Henderson. "As [the victim] began to stand up, he retrieved a handgun that was concealed in his pants and began slinging lead at the two would-be robbers. One suspect was hit multiple times and immediately collapsed in the street. The wounded suspect died. Police are investigating leads on his alleged accomplices. Standing Guard

Wayne LaPierreDisdain For Freedom

As Barack Obama takes the reins as U.S. President-bolstered by control of both houses of Congress-the nation's gun owners, the National Rifle Association, in particular, and our allies in the "new media" will face sustained threats to the free exercise of liberty.

On Second Amendment issues, expect attacks from many fronts in many forms.

The same is true for the avenues of free speech that we have used to protect the Right To Keep and Bear Arms-conservative talk radio and the Internet, both key to circumventing the corrupt national mainstream media.

Following the election, the Brady Campaign gloated, "We Won ... Now Let's Get Busy. "Sarah Brady's call-to-action confirmed our warnings about Obama's Second Amendment deceptions.

"I can tell you," she crowed, "it hasn't been this good for quite a while!"

"I want our newly elected officials to hit the ground running ... ".

John Podesta, Barack Obama's transition chief, in an Associated Press article headlined, "President-elect expected to use executive orders to change policies," said:

"There's a lot that the president can do using his executive authority without waiting for congressional action .. ." . (Emphasis added.)

Podesta-who, as Bill Clinton's White House Chief of Staff, was deeply involved in anti-Second Amendment efforts-said President Obama's policies and decisions would be in place "as soon as he gets sworn in so we hit the ground running."

Gun control policies?

For starters, job applicants for positions in the new administration are required to fill out a 63-item questionnaire that includes an obtrusive and outrageous question about gun ownership that will be used as a political litmus test.

"Do you or any members of your immediate family own a gun? If so, provide complete ownership and registration. information. Has the registration ever lapsed? Please also describe how and by whom it is used and whether it has been the cause of any personal injuries or property damage."

We were right. This shows the imbedded hostility for Americans' Second Amendment freedom that Obama and his administration have in their hearts.

There is more. Nestled in a massive "agenda" on Obama's transition website was his pledge to the gun ban crowd:

" ... closing the gun show loophole ... " Gun owners know that means making now-legal sales between individual law abiding Americans a criminal act.

" ... making guns in this country childproof." That would create government-mandated design of new firearms-ultimately leading to a future government phase-out of ownership of all non-"childproof" guns.

" ... making the expired federal Assault Weapons Ban permanent, as such weapons belong on foreign battlefields and not on our streets."

We can expect something far harsher than the Clinton semi-auto ban-a new version of NRA "F" -rated New York U.S. Rep. Caroline McCarthy's H. R. 1022.

It gives dictatorial bureaucratic authority to ban any "semiautomatic rifle or shotgun originally designed for military or law enforcement use, or a firearm based on the design of such a firearm, that is not particularly suitable for sporting purposes, as determined by the Attorney General." That unfettered discretion could be used to ban virtually every model of semi-auto rifle or shotgun in private hands.

And it would freeze in place millions of firearms owned by law-abiding citizens. Try this:" lt shall be unlawful for any person to transfer any assault weapon with a large capacity ammunition feeding device."

Consider that a version of the McCarthy ban was co-sponsored by Illinois U.S. Rep. Rahm Emanuel, who now sits as Barack Obama's White House chief of staff.

Emanuel, the key player in Bill Clinton's gun control schemes, is touted as "profane short tempered ... smart ... ruthless and vindictive."

Emanuel's influence over the Obama presidency is matched only by Podesta's.

And that brings me to their plans to silence the pro-Second Amendment voices of conservative talk radio.

For the past four years, Podesta has headed the Center for American Progress (CAP), created and bankrolled by globalist billionaire gun-ban king, George Soros.

Among Podesta's major Soros policy thrusts has been to collectivize commercial radio-canceling broadcast licenses and redistributing them to "progressive" local interests. The intent is to kill broadcasts like Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity and Glenn Beck, among others.

In addition to embracing the Podesta radio "diversity" scheme, President-elect Obama has appointed as his transition expert on the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) a rabid supporter of radio censorship through a return of the "Fairness" Doctrine-read "Censorship."

All of this adds up to arrogance and disdain. These people fear our freedom.

Perhaps the most presumptuous statement came from Valerie Jarrett, co-chair of the Obama transition team:

" ... Obama is prepared to really take power and begin to rule from day one." Rule? The last man to rule Americans was King George III.

That arrogance, the threats of abuse of power, will take its toll-not on us-but on the self-proclaimed "rulers."

Whether it's politicians, bureaucrats, the big media or judges, let's stand together to remind the elite ruling class, it is "we the people" who govern, not them.

The President's Column

Support Our Troops

With the elections now behind us and the holiday season at hand, it is time to consider the many blessings of freedom we enjoy and how much those blessings depend upon the sacrifice of others. I refer, of course, to the sacrifice of our men and women of America's Armed Forces.

As you share this holiday season with family and friends and give thanks for the bounty that we uniquely enjoy as Americans and free people, I hope that you will take time to thank those who make it all possible. I ask that you consider what Americans take for granted that simply wouldn't exist if it weren't for this nation's men and women in uniform:

  • Free and open elections
  • A free and unfettered press
  • The right to assemble, to petition our government and to speak freely in support of or in opposition to the policies of that government
  • Trial by jury and representation by legal counsel of our choice
  • Due process and equal protection under the law
  • Freedom from unreasonable searches and seizures
  • The blessing of our Second Amendment Right to Keep and Bear Arms which we exercise to defend ourselves, our families, our nation and our freedom
  • And, of course, the inalienable rights of free citizens to Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness

None of these precious birthrights would long endure without American GIs defending Freedom at home and abroad.

It was America's warriors who won our freedom, and it is American warriors who continue to keep us free. And no matter who their commander-in-chief may be, no matter what task he calls upon those warriors to accomplish, their solemn duty remains the same-to do, or to die trying.

And so I call upon you today-in the spirit of the season-to join me in thanking America's men and women in uniform for all that they give us-and to do so with a gift of your own for them.

Not long after becoming NRA's president, I asked NRA's leadership to develop a program to offer free one-year NRA memberships to all active-duty military personnel. That program is now in its second year. So far, our members have contributed enough money to allow us to give over 15,000 new memberships to America's men and women in uniform and for that, I thank you.

But make no mistake, thousands more active-duty military members would like to become NRA members and would proudly accept membership in NRA-if only more funds were available to pay for those membership benefits.

For that reason, I ask you to consider a holiday gift in support of our troops. I ask you to join Ingrid and me in giving a generous contribution to NRA's Military Membership Fund. Thanking our troops with a gift is easy.

Simply visit NRA's official website at www.nra.org, then click on "Support our Troops': Or call (877) 672-2000 and, in the spirit of holiday giving, pledge to buy an NRA membership for one or more American GIs today. You can purchase a membership for a specific member of the Armed Forces, or simply give a gift in support of our troops in general.

Next, did you know that according to the Veterans Administration, almost 3 million American veterans are receiving disability compensation? In fact, more than 257,000 of those vets are considered to be 100 percent disabled.

Please help me reach out to these American heroes by making a contribution to The NRA Foundation's Disabled Shooting Services Endowment, and help thousands of disabled Americans return to an interest and an ability that many thought they would never regain. More than a half-million sportsmen and women go hunting each year who have some degree of physical disability due to injury, illness or birth defect. But experts believe there are at least another half-million who would like to go hunting but don't, simply because they don't know where, how or even if they can.

NRA's Disabled Shooting Services Department is changing that. Our staff has designed a special apparatus that allows a person with just one arm-or an arm disabled by stroke-to continue to shoot a shotgun or rifle. Thanks in part to NRA's innovations, deer stands and duck blinds are now available with disabled-accessible designs.

We sponsor the National Disabled Indoor Air Rifle Championships and other competitions for the disabled. And we provide advice, training and technical expertise-free of charge to members and non-members alike-to help disabled persons around the world. Please help underwrite these vital philanthropic efforts by making a contribution to The NRA Foundation's Disabled Shooting Services Endowment today.

For more information about giving to The NRA Foundation Disabled Shooting Services Endowment, call (703) 267-1622.

And remember, giving to the NRA Military Membership Fund is as easy as going online to the NRA website and clicking on "Support Our Troops."

Please help honor our nation's greatest patriots with your gifts today. I wish you and yours a safe, healthy and happy holiday season.
