Armed Citizen

"Today I hug my wife and children." NRA Benefactor Life member Terry Lee wrote in an email to the NRA. The trouble began when Lee heard a muffled crash downstairs, then another. He grabbed his Kimber .45-caliber pistol and went to investigate. A naked man had broken in. Asked what he was doing, the intruder responded with expletives. Lee held the man at gunpoint and yelled for his wife to dial 9-1-1. "The man made a couple attempts to get up, but I was able to convince him to stay on the floor to avoid being shot." Lee explained. Police determined the suspect was high on drugs. He was also on probation, with priors for burglary and theft. "With [the NRA's] guidance over the years, I was able to keep calm and make rational decisions in a difficult and stressful situation." Lee said. It is every bank customer's worst nightmare. Police say a man handed a teller a note, demanding money and claimed to have a bomb strapped to his chest. Meanwhile, Nabil Fawzi was making a transaction with the adjacent teller when she whispered to him, "We might be getting robbed." Fawzi, who has a concealed carry permit, decided to take action. Drawing his handgun, he told the robber the heist was over. "But I have a bomb," the robber replied. "I don't care," said Fawzi. "You are not robbing this bank today." Fawzi approached the robber, determined he wasn't wearing a bomb or carrying a weapon, and held him for police. "In my situation, I felt like I could do it, and I just did it because it was the right thing to do," he said. Fawzi and his business partner celebrated by discounting gas by 5 cents and giving away free hot dogs at their station. (The Ann Arbor News, Ann Arbor, MI, 06/18/08)

Police say a man suspected in a burglary incident was already due in court for a separate, prior burglary. This time, however, he may have learned his lesson. Troy Howard woke to the sound of breaking glass as the suspect and at least one accomplice forcefully entered the home., Howard's wife of nearly 50 years locked the bedroom door and hid in the closet. Meanwhile, Howard grabbed his double-barreled shotgun just in time to see a beam from the suspect's flashlight shining under the door. When the suspect tried to force the door open, Howard emptied both barrels. The wounded suspects fled. (News at Norman, Lake Norman, NC, 06/25/08)

An employee of Chanellos Pizza was making a delivery when five juveniles sprang from the residence and began assaulting him, allegedly laughing and enjoying their attack. The deliveryman tried to run away, but the suspects wouldn't let him. Fearing the onslaught would continue until he was dead, the deliveryman drew his handgun and shot one of the suspects several times. The wounded suspect and his accomplices were arrested at the hospital. Unlike the incident involving a Pizza Hut deliveryman reported in July, the Chanellos deliveryman has his employer's full support. "I'm glad he did have a gun," said John Campbell, owner of Chanellos Pizza. "He might have been killed if he didn't." Campbell gave the deliveryman time off to recover. Seventy-year-old Billy Jackson and his wife were cleaning an apartment attached to their home when two masked men, one of them carrying a stolen gun, forced their way inside. Police say the intruders got the jump on Jackson, putting the gun in his face. "They had the weapon two feet from my head-I thought I was dead," recalls Jackson, who wanted to prevent the men from reaching his wife in the kitchen. Thinking quickly, Jackson feigned a heart attack, buying himself time to reach for the gun he had tucked in his waistband. He drew the pistol, killing both intruders. "I'm so sorry for the people I hurt," Jackson explained. "But I had no choice. I thought I was dead and my wife was dead." (The Courier Journal, Louisville, KY, 06/05/08)

Standing Guard

Wayne LaPierreThe Company He Keeps

What do a radical South Side Chicago priest who has demanded that law-abiding firearm dealers and state legislators be "snuffed out" and Chicago's political boss, who is "livid" and "outraged" over the Supreme Court's recognition of the Second Amendment have in common?

Influence over Barack Obama.

In the case of Mayor Richard S. Daley-who heads the toughest, most powerful urban political machine in the nation-his early primary endorsement of freshman U.s. Senator Obama's bid for the Democratic nomination for the presidency requires a big political payback. And I suspect that payback will involve our gun rights if Obama takes the White House in November.

When the Supreme Court issued its historic landmark decision in June striking down the District of Columbia gun ban as violating the individual Right to Keep and Bear Arms, Mayor Daley issued a five-minute diatribe.

As the Chicago Tribune, which immediately demanded the repeal of the Second Amendment, put it:

"In railing against the Supreme Court ruling, Daley stressed the danger of private gun ownership ... ."

Alluding to the urban gun-ban cabal headed by his New York colleague Mayor Michael Bloomberg, Daley sputtered, "Every mayor will be outraged over this. Why should we allow more and more guns in our homes? Could you see everyone having guns in their home?"

With the extraordinary victory for the nation's gun owners, the Supreme Court recognized that all peaceable law abiding Americans should indeed have that choice.

If Daley had his way, he wouldn't "allow" a single gun in any home. Recently, in Los Angeles, he said, "It is about time that America wakes up and says ... we can outlaw smoking in a bar so quickly, yet you cannot outlaw guns in America." And at another rally he screamed:

"NO GUNS IN THE HANDS OF THE PEOPLE OF AMERICA!"

Daley is a defendant in NRA's lawsuit to throw out the Chicago gun ban, which is virtually identical to the unconstitutional D.C. ban.

Time and time again, Obama has said the Chicago ban is in line with his vision of the Second Amendment.

No matter how much Obama wraps himself in empty words about the Second Amendment, know him by the friends he keeps-like Dick Daley.

And that brings me to the radical priest, Michael Pfleger.

On May 27, 2007, with a mob of 1,000 gun-ban radicals cheering him on-blocking the entrance to Chuck's Gun Shop and Range in Riverdale, III., a suburb of Chicago-Pfleger screamed a clear death threat against the owner.

"John Riggio. R-I-G-G-I-O. We're going to find you and snuff you out ... like a rat-we're going to catch you and pull you out ... whatever it takes to shut this gun store down ... We're gonna snuff out John Riggio ...

"We're gonna snuff out legislators who are against our gun laws."

I have never encountered such hatred. Pfleger's words were recognized as death threats by Chicago's Cardinal George who issued a rebuke-saying, "publicly delivering a threat against anyone's life betrays the civil order and is morally outrageous, especially if this threat came from a priest."

Why is this radical priest so important with the coming election? Because

Fr. Pfleger is a key long-time advisor to Sen. Obama, who in turn procured for Pfleger a $225,000 grant from the state and a $100,000 earmark from the federal government. Pfleger is a financial contributor to Obama's campaigns.

In a Chicago Sun-Times article touting Obama's faith-in which he stressed the importance of close advisors in "maintaining your moral compass"-the newspaper declared:

"Friends and advisors such as the Rev. Michael Pfleger ... who has known Obama for the better part of 20 years, help him keep that moral compass set, he [Obama] says."

Most Americans never heard of Michael Pfleger until videotapes surfaced of a racist rant on Obama's behalf mocking Hillary Clinton. The performance by Fr. Pfleger was at the invitation of Obama's Trinity United Church of Christ, made infamous by its America hating pastor Jeremiah Wright, with his diatribes declaring, "God Bless America? No! No! No! God D--n America."

After weeks of dithering as to whether to leave Wright's Trinity, it was only Fr. Pfleger's Hillary-smearing rant that ultimately caused Obama to quit.

Yet Obama was silent on Pfleger's "snuff" threats.

But then closing down law-abiding gun stores is part of Obama's real Second Amendment vision. He has proposed a law banning federally licensed firearm dealers from operating within five miles of a school or park. Think about almost any community in America and what that would mean.

There are those who say guilt by association is unfair. To them I would say, 20 years with these men as Obama's closest confidants and spiritual advisors cannot be discounted.

When it comes to the Second Amendment, the company Obama keeps speaks more than his own words. They would destroy the Second Amendment and so would Obama, the candidate.

The President's Column

Sandra S. Froman

Freedom's Future Is In Your Hands

Summer's over, the Supreme Court has spoken and, by a 5-4 decision, the world now knows that the Second Amendment does, indeed, protect an individual right. Now that we've celebrated, it's time to focus on the future-and that means the 2008 general elections, and the stakes couldn't be higher.

As you know, presidential candidate Barack Obama has supported and proposed some of the most radically oppressive gun bans and anti-gun laws in American history. (For a full report with documented sources go to www.nraila.org/obama.)

What you may not know is that Obama and his anti-gun allies are building an enormous political machine the size and strength of which are unprecedented in American political history. I need your help, right now, to fight fire with fire and to deliver freedom from the jaws of this clear and present danger.

Unless you do your part to match, meet and reverse the momentum of Obama's political juggernaut, we could face the most anti-gun president-ever.

You've probably heard that Barack Obama began as a so-called "community organizer" in Chicago in 1992, where "community organizer" was code for "aggressive political operative."

Obama headed the local branch of "Project Vote," which recruited and trained more than 700 deputy voter registrars who went into urban Chicago neighborhoods and registered more than 150,000 new voters in just six months.

In 1993, Chicago magazine reported that the 1992 elections "turned on these totals"-elections that made Bill Clinton president.

Now, "Obama & Co." have taken their program nationwide.

In May, Obama's campaign launched a massive voter registration and mobilization effort in all 50 states, registering hundreds of thousands of new voters: 150,000 in Indiana; 165,000 in North Carolina and 200,000 in Pennsylvania.

Meanwhile, Project Vote joined forces with another group called "ACORN," stopping people on city sidewalks and registering them to vote. (To read what's being said about "ACORN," go to www.discoverthenetworks.org/groupProfiIe.asp?grpid=6968).

According to Project Vote, they've recruited more than 1 million new voters in each of the past two national elections, and expect to add another 1.2 million voters in 2008.

I ask you, now, to help me fight fire with fire by matching everyone of those new Obama votes with new pro-freedom voters of our own.

I need your help to find every hunter; every recreational shooter; every rifle, shotgun or handgun owner; and every law-abiding, freedom-loving patriot in America, and transform them into informed, engaged, energized, registered and ready-to-roll "Freedom First Voters" on Election Day.

If you're not registered to vote, register now. Then, go out and find every gun owner and hunter you know and get them registered to vote. Remind them that every vote counts-especially this year!

Freedom isn't free. And we must never allow others to do our work for us-now is the time to put an end to complacency, or whatever it is that allows gun owners to shirk their responsibility as American citizens by failing to vote.

For information on how to register to vote in your state, or any state, go to www.nraila.org/vote2008 today!

If you still need proof that your vote is important, simply consider

D.C. v. Heller-the most important U.s. Supreme Court decision on the Second Amendment in U.s. history.

Where would we be today if AI Gore, John Kerry-or worse yet, Barack Obama-had appointed the last two Supreme Court justices?

What if, instead of Chief Justice Roberts and Justice Alito, we now had thanks to a President Obama-a Chief Justice Clinton, and a Justice Schumer, Edwards or Biden on the Supreme Court?

How would they have defined your most precious constitutional freedoms?

A President Obama wouldn't simply get to handpick Supreme Court justices; he'd also choose all of the hundreds of federal judges a president typically gets to appoint.

Worse, if anti-gun forces also control Congress, the Senate will be a mere rubber stamp for Obama's appointees.

With the national debate over gun bans now moving into the federal judiciary as a result of the Supreme Court's decision in the Heller case (the D.C. gun-ban case), it's more important than ever that we have a pro-freedom president to nominate pro-freedom federal judges, and a pro freedom Senate to confirm them.

Indeed, from the White House to your statehouse, from Capitol Hill to your hometown, the candidates you elect on Tuesday, November 4, will have more of an effect on your Right to Keep and Bear Arms than ever before.

We must match "The Obama Machine" new voter for new voter if we don't want Heller reversed. Please, step to the plate and do your part today!

Register to vote! Then convince every other gun owner and hunter you can find to do the same. Then, get ready for the fight of your life to save your Right to Keep and Bear Arms.

The future of freedom in America is in your hands.
