7-30: Today I have gone through the web site and cleaned out any of the old defunct links to bungie.com. That site has moved on to become bungie.net with all new content. I managed to scrounge the files the links pointed to from a variety of sources. Eventually I don't want any file to be an outside link, rather I want to be an alternative source in case a disaster befalls the site I am linking to. Today the Lynx page is updated, the HAS Tools page, the Battle Cat's Litterbox, and Harpers Terminals tutorial follow suit. I hate broken links.
7-29: Holy cow! What a month! I'm finally done changing all the pages at the old Earthlink House of Wacks site to refer users to the new webwonks.org House of Wacks. What a huge job consisting of editing and publishing over 300 pages of HTML. I think I may have finally divested myself of Earthlink. I still have some emails to send out but now I can concentrate on providing new content here. Till then, visit the Joke of the Weak and have a giggle.
7-28: If you are a Marathon fan, and you were looking at the old Earthlink site, you might find yourself surprised to be here. Yep, the Battle Cat's Litterbox has moved, and it took most of yesterday and a huge chunk of today to do that. The NRA archive for the month of July is now uploaded to the NRA Archives. The monthly archive consists of the 3 feature columns from the American Rifleman: The Armed Citizen, Standing Guard, and the Presidents Column. Enjoy.
7-27: I spent the entire day yesterday replacing the web pages of the old Earthlink web site with bounce pages to bring folks here. If you are here because of that, then WELCOME! That old site is no longer updated and will eventually vanish off the face of the Internet altogether. If you are linking to resources on my old Earthlink site, then re-link to them here. Some things got reorganized so if you can't find them here, then send me an email and I will locate it for you. Because of the huge amount of work redirecting traffic, all I have for you is an updated Joke of the Weak for today.
7-26: 264 vanquished competitors have fallen at Team SETI's feet this week. even though we did not do as many units as we normally do in a week. There was an outage at SETI@home that must have thrown EVERYBODY off, we only suffered for a day. Frankly I expected to do more units than that last week. Now that Team SETI doesn't have to dial in any more, I figured we would beat the average of 18 units. Maybe next week. Till then, visit the Team SETI page in the Hobbies department and see what's going on.
7-23: I put another High School Art item up in the Art Portfolio section of the Hobbies department. Featured is a graphic depicting some poor schnook in an epic attempt to do what we have all attempted to do at one time and I'm sure, with much less grace. That being: crossing rubber melting, red hot, glowing furnace sand to get to the beach.
7-22: Mark this day in your calendar. Today is the day the Gary's Chefs Blend Hot Sauce hit the streets. Basically this is an equal mixture of Gary's salsa Godzilla Brand Hot Sauce and Gary's Shock and Awe Thai Chili Sauce. This recipe is a natural consequence of having both bottles sitting on the breakfast table at the same time. Each recipe is delicious in it's own right but combining the two is a stunning taste treat that will not only knock your socks off, it will trim your toenails, push the cuticles back and cure that foot fungus that has been bothering you ever since you ran naked through the girl's dorm. Get burned at the Recipes page in the Chili Peppers section of the Hobbies department.
7-21: "The right of self-defense is one of the fundamental reasons for the Second Amendment ... the most practical, everyday individual application of the Right to Keep and Bear Arms." Kayne Robinson, the president of the NRA spells out what this means to you as the head of your household. Also emphasized is the necessity for having the MEANS to use armed counter force to protect your family and yourself from violent criminals. It's a good read, the President's Column in the NRA section of the Extra department.
7-20: There is nothing to tell you that you would find interesting or fun. Just a lot of running around doing stuff here in the background of the web site. There was a tremendous clutter and lack of centralization because of the way the web site was scattered to the 4 winds on the different Earthlink web sites. Now for me, as webmaster updating and maintaining the site, it is a more logical set up and will be simpler to work with. At least you have a joke.
7-19: Holy cow! Last week I consumed most spare CPU cycles working 10 hour days transferring the web page resources from Earthlink to it's new home here on webwonks and we STILL beat up on 207 competitors at SETI@home. Amazing. Could Termette being on vacation have anything to do with the unexpected great results? Check it out on the Team SETI page over in the Hobbies department. You decide.
7-16: Another full day of moving files from Earthlink to webwonks. Finally all the files are over and all the links are fixed. At least they should be. If you find a link that is broken or takes you back to Earthlink then please email me from the home page and give me a heads up. I combined 4 web sites back into one web site and wound up with a 32 meg web site. Tomorrow I start replacing the Earthlink web pages with pages that say I've moved and maybe I'll start getting some activity over here on the new site. What a huge, tedious, and meticulous job! YOU DON'T PAY ME ENOUGH! =) So once again all I really have for you that is new is the Joke of the Weak.
7-15: Ack. What a day yesterday. I spent 10 hours yesterday transferring files over from Earthlink to the new site. I estimate 2 more days to transfer and install the remaining files and another day to clean up stuff that got messy because of the way the web site was spread out over 5 different Earthlink web sites. The problem was they didn't allow more than 10 megs of disk space for each web site. I had to spread out my resources to keep from using any one site up. Logically webwonks.org was one web site. but in actuality it was 5. I feel like I'm sewing a corpse back together! This weekend I think I'll pass a jolt of electricity through it see if it comes to life. The Joke of the Weak is functional, go have a chuckle.
7-14: The Bush Administration slammed the door shut on U.N. plans to impose international gun controls on American soil. This is a victory for the Constitution of the United States of America! Read about how the enemies of America's Constitution, both foreign and domestic, plot against the very backbone of America on the Standing Guard page in the NRA section of the Extra department.
7-13: The move from Earthlink has begun! Starting yesterday, I have begun transferring the House of Wacks from Earthlink to my new web host NameSecure.com. As soon as I get all the html over and the new webwonks.org DNS has propagated, I will take down the pages on Earthlink, replacing them with blank pages with links to this new site. This is a LOT of work, a LOT of work, over 10 megs of very small files need to come over. I'll try to add some fun new stuff during this time, I have a TON of new disk space and bandwidth to play with.
7-12: Team SETI's dial up problems are solved now. OSX Panther was having trouble letting programs like SETI@home auto dial in to get more units but now that we've switched to DSL there is no more dialing in, just retrieving the next unit. This saves 1-2 hours processing time per unit. See, when the SETI client dialed in it would contact SETI@home and think it's mission was accomplished. After an hour SETI@home would check to see if itself had a unit and finding none it would contact SETI@home again but this time it would (hopefully) be connected and it would download the unit. As a result it is now simply grabbing a new unit when needed, we have stomped 193 competitors without it even being a full week of SETI@home. I hope to see 19-20 unit weeks from now on. Goin' down in the Hobbies department.
7-9: I linked to the Origin of Species page in the Battle Cat's Litterbox yesterday from Inside Mac Games forums without realizing I hadn't yet fixed the graphics there from the big conversion to HTML 4.01 Transitional. It's OK though because they already know I'm a doofus dork. It's fixed now. Now that it's too late. I hate my life.
7-8: Because of the terribly slanted nature of the "news" you only hear about cases where guns are used illegally by criminals or to harm innocent people. You never hear about the multitudes of cases whereby the use of a firearm by a law abiding citizen saved lives or protected the innocent. Studies indicate that firearms are used more than 2.5 millions times a year for legal personal protection, and that the presence of a firearm, without a shot being fired, prevents crime in many instances. Shooting usually can be justified only where crime constitutes an immediate, imminent threat to life, limb, or, in some cases, property. You can read some of these accounts on the Armed Citizen page in the NRA section of the Extra department.
7-7: Happy Bungie Day! If you don't know what that means, never mind. Hey there is some big news here at the House of Wacks. We will be moving soon to a new host and a new server. I will try to make it as painless as possible but brother expect pain and lots of it. For one, if you have been using the webwonks.org DNS you are OK, it you have been using the home.earthlink.net/~glsimmons7 DNS you need to change your links and your bookmarks to webwonks. More news as it breaks.
7-6: Hope you had a great Fourth of July but not so great that you can no longer count to ten on your fingers. All our neighbors bought fireworks so we could live and bleed vicariously off of them. By the way, hats off to the Department of Homeland Security for preventing a terrorist attack that almost certainly would have happened on the most symbolic of American holidays! Today's update is yesterdays news but I had Monday off so everything is kicked back a day. The Team SETI page is now ready to go in the Hobbies department.
7-2: It sucks to get old. Case in point is that after a month of being live, I finally remembered to add the Marathon (on Windows) for Dummies link to the Site Map page. Now if only I could remember why I came into the room... got my glasses, got my teeth, got my prunes, got my Bengay... OH, I remember, it was to back my car out of the hole in the wall!!
7-1: New month! Everything has been rolled over into the new calendar month. If you are looking for news from last month then check out the news archives for news extending back to almost the beginning of this web site!
