Archived News for the Month of September 2002

New this Week:

9-30: My slow but continual slide in the SETI ratings continue. Switching to the OSX client has taken the time needed to crunch a unit from 9 hours to almost 24! Is it OSX, the client, the size of the units, the math performed on a unit? Why is it taking so long? It LOOKS like it is running as fast but there is more work to do. There are no ready answers at the SETI site. As usual I am on my own. Check out the computational carnage on the SETI page in the Extra department.

9-27: I found a great link for Mac owners. It is a place called Mac Fix-it. It is a very handy tech sight for anyone having a problem with their Mac. Check it out in the Information section of the Lynx page.

9-25: We have reached a milestone at the House of Wacks. As of this writing there have been a total of 207,859  visitors to this glorious personal web site. This breaks down to a total of 1,455,578 hits resulting in a total of 8.33 Gigabytes (that's 8.33 BILLION bytes) transferred! I owe it all to you folks! Thanks! You know what would be cool? If every time you visited you dropped a quarter in the cup...

9-24: I believe we would be a lot safer flying these days if the pilots were armed. So do a lot of people even some liberal politicians who are usually busy stripping away the freedoms of the common man. Read this interesting article on the Standing Guard page in the NRA section of the Extra Department.

9-23: The SETI page over in the Hobbies department gets a long overdue update. I have converted my operating system to OSX and have changed my SETI crunching client to the OSX version. I don't know if it is the new client or whether they have changed the calculations for everybody but these units have gone from taking 9 hours to almost 24 hours! That plus my lack of SETI activity during the down time of the House of Wacks has hurt my standings. Read it and weep.

9-20: The sporting world and firearms enthusiasts alike mourn the recent loss of Bill Ruger, the owner of Sturm Ruger firearms. Read a tribute to him in the President's Column on the NRA section in the Extra department.

9-19: The Lynx page gets an update with very cool link if you are into Bungie Studios games like I am. This site is called Forerunners and it is giving away free web sites to those folks wanting to make a fan site about one of Bungie's games. This totally free deal includes 10 megs of web space, a virtual DNS, a POP e-mail address, vast file storage space and all the bandwidth you need. Steve Campbell and I have created this monster because we just plain love Bungie games. Check out Forerunners in the Games section of the Lynx page.

9-18: The Armed Citizen feature of the NRA page over in the Extra section is proof positive that firearms in the hands of ordinary law abiding citizens is exactly what criminals hate most about America. Read it and weep Algore.

9-17: OK, now that was a big deal. I have transferred 13 megs of files from my self destructing Apple iDisk to my new online disk space, relinked all the files to point to the new site, then reuploaded the entire House of Wacks. And you think I just sit around all day picking my teeth with a gold toothpick! Bah!! Hey let me know if there is a graphic or downloadable file missing, OK?

9-16: Hey, remember the House of Wacks? Well I've been through some hard times online-disk-space wise. But now thanks to a great friend (Steve Campbell) who runs a low cost web providing service, I now have the online disk space back that was lost from Apple computer reniging on it's deal to provide me with 20 megs of online iDisk space. They promised me this if I bought OS9, the bums. So anyway we are back! Go check out the Joke of the Weak. Have a laugh.

As usual, the Joke of the Weak is updated every weekday by 8AM PST and the SETI page is updated every Monday. The NRA pages President's Column, Standing Guard and Armed Citizen are updated each month.
